STYLE GURU BIO: Emily Hooker

From elastic waistband boot-cut jeans to smooth skinnies; wrinkled soccer championship T-shirts to mock turtlenecks; zip-up hoodies to sleek blazers, trust me when I tell you I haven’t always had an interest in dressing well. That all changed in high school when I found myself in fashion, and it was later magnified when I joined Miami’s Fashion Club. Being in the club helped me solidify my decision to make a total 180 from aspiring to be a doctor, to majoring in marketing and minoring in fashion design. And I have to admit; the path I’ve chosen has proven to be excitingly fun.

The courage to wear the sometimes wacky, sometimes sophisticated clothes I do today doesn’t come from just me. Some of that courage is created by the fashionable people around me: my sister and my dear friends. Seeing one of them step out in an edgy dress, or a trendy wide leg pant inspires me to reach for that out-there new shirt instead of sticking with my safe white T-shirt.

When I’m not caught up in online shopping or helping a friend pick out an outfit, you can find me running laps around the track. I’m a passionate, full time student-athlete. I’ve been running for longer than I can remember, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all to hear that my parents really did place bets on whose baby crawled the fastest back in daycare. They both ran in college, too. Despite them being biased towards track, they pushed me to try almost everything imaginable: soccer, ballet, horseback riding, ice-skating, basketball (not so savvy at this one) and piano. The list goes on. The encouragement from them to always experiment spilled over into my personal style and created my best quality: the desire to try new things. My style is a compilation of every aspect of myself, and I cannot wait to share it with you on CollegeFashionista!
