STYLE GURU BIO: Emma Seymour

To me, fashion is people’s attempt to convey their personality without speaking or interacting. It is a way to put your mark out there for the world to see. My name is Emma Seymour and I am a new Style Guru. I am a sophomore at Cornell University majoring in Human Biology and minoring in Fiber Science. I have always loved fashion and constructing my own clothes, from altering thrift store treasures or making something completely from scratch. I hope to show that you do not have to be a Fashion major to appreciate textiles.

After my first year at Cornell, I loved seeing how unique everyone’s styles were. Sure, the Preppy Cornellian still exists, but the quad becomes a runway in the warmer months, showing trends from all over the world. In the colder months, however, only bulky jackets can be seen until their stylish outfits are revealed underneath.

My style is forever changing. Last year, I tried to embrace a minimalistic look better suited for the ever-changing Ithaca weather. Then over the summer, I began gravitating towards more bohemian styles such as the crochet pants I am wearing in these pictures. Now, I am trying to mix the two in my wardrobe with fabulous Ithaca thrift store finds. If I had to describe my style with one word, it would be eclectic. As Dr. Seuss said, “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?”

Dressing fearlessly for yourself is something I believe we should all strive for. You will find me studying organic chemistry in the library wearing anything from my beat up black Dr. Martens, snakeskin romper or my knitted crop top. No matter what I chose to wear when I am half asleep in the morning, it is an outfit that I love and feel confident in. So I encourage you all to dress for yourselves. Fashion is for fun. Enjoy my musings about style around Cornell’s gorgeous campus!
