Hello! I’m Erin Yu and I am a freshman at Rutgers University- New Brunswick. I am currently undecided, but hope to end up in the fashion industry somehow. This is my first semester being a Style Guru and I couldn’t be more excited. After discovering the site junior year, I dreamed about being a Style Guru ever since.
I greatly attribute my love of fashion and style to my father. Growing up, he and my mother would always take my sister and me shopping. I can still remember him telling my mother that boot-cut jeans would not be in style next year which held true (skinny jeans). He really fostered an idea of style and quality for me. However, now that I can dress myself, he thinks I am a little too out there.
I did not quite start being so active in pursuing my fashion interests until the the middle of freshman year. It was when my mother received a free year long subscription to Allure. Since no one else read it, I picked up it every month. I also would borrow Vogue from the library. From those magazines, I learned the names of top designers and supermodels. I began to read and watch the Fashion Weeks around the world. It was also when I started watching YouTube videos and watched all the “beauty gurus.” From then on, I began to recognize major makeup brands and store brands. I looked to “OOTW” videos for style inspiration and changed my wardrobe. I even had a phase where I created a bunch of accessories and DIYs for myself and friends. Together, my love for style and the industry really grew.
Even now, I cannot give a proper label to my style. Some call it urban, hipster, basic. I, for one, am a fan of basics and comfort. My look can really depend on my mood and what I am feeling that day. I love having pieces that you can style with many different items to create different looks. For this, the main piece is the mustard cardigan. This color doesn’t sound pleasing, but is such a cold weather color. I paired it with a versatile basic white cami, thick leggings and black booties which are also rainboots. To complete the look, I added a gold vintage locket as an accessory to add more to the shirt and a Daniel Wellington watch with a leather strap to tie in the colors.
Styling my clothes and creating beauty looks have definitely increased my confidence over the years. People say that clothes don’t say anything about a person, but I beg to differ. It does not always mean that you want to look good for others. I want to look good for myself. That mentality also keeps me unfazed by other people’s judgments.
I am beyond excited for this opportunity and cannot wait to keep exploring my love of fashion and seeing all the creativity of CollegeFashionista.
