Who am I? My whole life I’ve been identified with labels. A Muslim. A hijabi. An ambassador. An arab. A girl. A Fashionista. None of those are bad things; however, each label comes with baggage. Baggage that continues to place assumptions, stereotypes and expectations from me as a person. Don’t get me wrong I love being Muslim, a hijabi, an ambassador and a Fashionista, I’m sick and tired of being placed into these categories where such liabilities are mine. So here’s what I’m going to do instead; tell you what I know about myself.
I’m currently a junior at Wichita State University. I’m one of five children. I’m the favorite child. I have a sister who loves Drake and a brother who is on currently on a college search. I have tickets to see Hasan Minhaj of The Daily Show in Lawrence, Kansas this October. I have the best and cutest parents ever. My sorority sisters and I are excited as ever to recruit potential new members. I’m returning to CollegeFashionista after a fun-filled, travel-filled summer. I’m excited to play soccer with my team, The Balltouchers, again this year. I’m hoping to attend Law School post graduation. I know my friends think I’m funny. I’ve had the same best friend since I was five years old. I’m taking a macroeconomics class that has nothing to do with my major or any interests really. I have the best mentors. I really love herbal teas and occasionally coffee (with lots of sugar and milk). Overall, what I really know, is that I’m very blessed in all aspects of my life. Thank God for everything!
Dr. Seuss once said, “Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is noone alive that is youer than you.” So here’s to discovering me, defying all assigned labels and continuing this journey called life.
