Hey! My name’s Jeanette and I’m a senior studying English at the University of California, Berkeley. I’m graduating in a year, and needless to say, I’m super anxious. With the uncertainties that the rest of my life will bring for me, I am happy that fashion has always been a constant staple. I love both writing and fashion, and being a Style Guru lets me combine the two in the best way possible.
Fashion is amazing because it is something that grows with you. This summer, I was lucky enough to study in Paris and let me tell you, the Parisians know a thing or two when it comes to fashion! During my trip, I shopped a lot! I fell in love with the long silhouettes and classic staples that the French women pull off so seamlessly. Fashion adapts through various countries and people, it starts to meld into different cultures and sub-cultures that we can see taking form from the subway stations to various five-star restaurants.
As if that’s not reason enough to love fashion, the origins for my passion for fashion came when I was a child. My mom has great style and appreciates good clothing. She would constantly look through magazines studying the clothes that the models wore and I would be right there looking over her shoulder.
To describe my style, I would say that it is ever-changing, though I like to stay with blacks and whites for a certain polished yet cool street style look, or the model-off-duty look with the classic blue jeans and t-shirt. I also really like the male silhouette and how that is being experimented through the female body in fashion.
In my current outfit I wanted to give a nod to the ‘70s with my front button-down faux suede scalloped edge skirt and on trend crop top. I am also wearing black Gizeh Birkenstocks for my shoes. My black and white masculine leather varsity jacket throws us back to the ‘50s. I didn’t realize I was mixing eras until I really analyzed my outfit, I think that just shows us how fashion can have extra meaning if we just paid a little more attention.
I hope this new school year, for both of us, is RAD!
