STYLE GURU BIO: Jessica Caruso

My personal style first developed at a young age. I was very adamant about being independent so as soon as I could express that I wanted to pick out my own outfits, I was creating my own looks. I think that from there my love of fashion took off, so I owe it to my parents for letting me be me. However, I don’t know if letting a seven-year-old pack my her own suitcases was the best idea.

Growing up in the suburbs of Long Island kept me sheltered from diversity, but luckily Manhattan was a short train ride away. I was always in such awe of the city and I fell in love. Despite frequent trips to my second favorite island, my style was not influenced much by it. I hold true to my roots and have a very classic, polished style that could also be defined as preppy. I fully believe that what you wear says a lot about who you are as a person. I always made it a point to look clean and put-together in order to make a good impression and be taken seriously. However, I never want to come across as uptight, so I incorporate the occasional fun print or sparkle into my mostly neutral wardrobe. My closet overflows with clothes that have clean lines and feminine structure. My staple accessories are pearl earrings and an oversized watch. The majority of my wardrobe is classic because I love timeless pieces that I can wear over and over again. The idea that a style can withstand the tests of time is such a cool concept to me. However, I’m not afraid to experiment with new, edgy trends.

As my love for clothes developed, I discovered the Fashion Institute of Technology. I knew most of my life that it was my dream to attend college there. So as you can guess, the day my acceptance letter arrived in my mailbox, I cried many, many tears of joy. Now that I am here, I am at home in my favorite city. Finding my place and being able to study what I love has given me the confidence to pursue a lot of new things. Which included starting a personal blog and becoming more adventurous with my look. Despite all the chaos and hustle and bustle of Manhattan, I haven’t lost touch with first home and my original, classic style.
