Hello Fashionistas and Fashionistos! Welcome to my little corner of CollegeFashionista. My name is Julia DePalma and I am a sophomore majoring in Fashion Design with minors in Marketing and Visual Journalism at Kent State University. I’m so glad to be returning with CollegeFashionista this summer after a lovely spring semester filled with fun and staggering street style!
Besides spending my nights (mornings and afternoons, too!) in the studio working, I lifeguard and teach swim lessons, imagine I’m Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl and migrate back and forth between my home in Rhode Island and school in Ohio. I love to travel- I’ll be spending a majority of this summer in Spain and I am so excited to share all of the wonderful street style that I discover along the way with each of you!
I have always loved and lived for fashion. I decided over 10 years ago that I would be a fashion designer and that dream has stubbornly remained in my head and heart since. I would say that it’s on its way to becoming a reality. Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino and Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman of Marchesa are the most inspiring to me. The over the top, yet totally tasteful creations are simply stunning. One could probably say that I would waltz through life in a ball gown (especially if it were Marchesa!) if I could. Since that isn’t entirely practical, I try to incorporate the same modern elegance and classic poise that is exemplified by such designers into my own wardrobe each day.
I find it amazing that every time we reach for a garment from the store rack or pick up a piece of clothing hanging in the closet, we are making a statement about our respective personalities, moods and opinions. Your clothing is the first thing that other people will see—why not give them something to look at?
My own style is preppy, (blame Newport!) but also very bohemian depending on the day. I love dabbling here and there with other styles as well. I love to mix prints, wear giant flowers and I can never say no to dangly earrings or an ear cuff.
I can’t wait to share my favorite street styles with each of you throughout the summer. Rhode Island and Spain may be on separate continents, but both locales share beautiful and very unique fashions worn by individuals whose personalities shine as brightly as their clothing. I’ll see you every Tuesday with the latest from wherever I find myself in the next few months.
