Hello Fashionistas/os! It’s me, Julia, and I’m excited to say this is my second semester interning as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista. This summer I will be turning 20 and in the fall, I’ll be heading into my junior year of college. In other news, I’m feeling too much older and none the wiser.
I’ve always liked to think that I possessed a keen sense of fashion my entire life. I was off to an excellent start from birth with my ruffled onesie and bow combos, averaging four outfit changes per day. Then I look back on my middle school years, clothed head to toe in Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister Co. or Aeropostale, shamelessly bearing every logo they had to offer. Stay tuned because this might not have even been my greatest fashion faux pas. Traveling even further back to my fourth grade picture day, one would find little Julia sporting a pair of black stretchy gauchos, knee-high leather boots, a black knit shrug and a white camisole with the finest of all sparkles lining the top. In my defense, this look was all the rage in my elementary school, and I knew better than to go against the conventional fashion norms of the time period.
As I grew older, however, I came to realize it was okay to swim against the current and take chances with fashion. I believe fashion is one of the most visible and personal forms of art that everyone is capable of expressing themselves through. My tastes shifted away from brand names and I began to incorporate new pieces into my wardrobe regardless of their label. Splurging is part of human nature (especially because adidas Superstars are insanely fly and practical), but spending ridiculous sums of money is not always necessary to look particularly fabulous and I will foreshadow a future article by saying a complete, stylish look could without a doubt be put together simply from thrift store finds.
While 9 year-old, gaucho-wearing Julia may be confused by the lack of rhinestones on my vintage denim jacket, I’d like to think she’d be proud of the confidence I have to wear what I want. When it’s a beautiful day out, one shouldn’t be restricted to T-shirts and denim shorts, but rather, should have the power to rock a fun matching crop top and bottom set and maybe, just maybe, throw on a pair of round sunglasses that don’t really flatter your face shape but you can’t help but love regardless.
I look forward to a rad semester full of inspirations, risks and hopefully minimal fashion disasters.
