Hey guys, my name is Kaitlin. I am currently a sophomore studying advertising and business administration and management at Boston University. I am beyond excited about this opportunity to share my perspective on fashion and style with you all. To me, fashion mostly represents universal trends, whereas style is the unique manner through which you approach fashion. Style is personal, limitless and expressive. It is ever-changing.
This summer, I was blessed with the opportunity to travel to three amazing cities: Taipei, Osaka and Berlin. I was inspired, yet also overwhelmed, by the significantly different fashion trends found in all three places. The overwhelming feelings resided in me only because I so desperately wanted to adopt the local trends myself, but did not know how to incorporate them into my existing personal style. Throughout my travels, I learned that you do not need to stick to one style. Style is rather limitless and the best looks often emerge when stylistic boundaries are crossed. I found that the most complex looks are created where contrasting styles merge. For example, incorporating Asian elements into a dominantly western look can create a stimulating, dynamic, and complex appearance. Ultimately, style is an expression of you and your culture, so don’t be afraid to experiment!
In light of this, the essence of my personal style is east meets west, meaning my style is a beautiful hodgepodge of trends inspired by cultures around the world. As an American born Taiwanese, who grew up in both California and Shanghai, I come from a culturally diverse background. I try to portray both cultural sides of me through my style.
For this look, I decided to go with an urban and modern, yet minimalist appearance. I chose to wear a clean-cut jumpsuit dress. The general cut of the dress resembles the shape of hanbok, traditional Korean attire. However, the wide sleeves and folds in the front embody elements of the Japanese kimono. I matched this with a pair of chunky platform sandals to give the entire look a finished, edgy feel. And to top it off, I wore a simple silver chain necklace to complement the silver on the shoes.
I am thrilled to share more looks and fashion hacks I discovered while traveling these past few months with you all this coming fall! And I hope my outlook on fashion delivers as an inspiration. Be sure to stay tuned for my latest posts and follow my journey with fashion on social media! I can’t wait to interact with you all! In the mean time, stay RAD!
