Greetings to all lovers of everything that is fashion. My name is Kara Woodward and I am a student at Kent State University studying Fashion Merchandising with hopes for a Entrepreneurship minor. This is my very first semester writing for CollegeFashionista and I am very excited!
One thing that I love about fashion is the way that each individual interprets it for themselves. I think I can speak for a lot of people when I say that I love to people-watch and that is because I have always been intrigued by what they are wearing. Fashion and the way a person styles themselves can be the most interesting expression of who they are. A big reason that I love CollegeFashionista so much is because each individual gets to point out a person’s style that speaks to them and everyone gets to learn the beauty of fashion.
Even at a young age when I was small enough to fit in a shopping cart I would feel every garment that I passed and say, “pretty, pretty.” I even began a “goofy pile” of clothes that I no longer felt had significance to my wardrobe or reflected my personality at the age of 5-years-old. As I entered high school I was eager to help my friends pick out outfits and always had mine ready a week in advance. Flipping through the latest Vogue and admiring the work of Bill Cunningham in the New York Times instead of doing school work made me feel like I was a part of a different, more expressive world. It helped me grow and my love for individuality only pushed my curiosity for how I was going to fit into it.
I have grown to learn that I have a large heart for community service and helping others, and the acts of philanthropy that fashion can take to help make this world a better place. At Kent State University I am hoping to cohesively pursue my love of fashion and helping others. Some specific organizations that I love are TOMS, TOMS Marketplace and FEED, and one day I hope to be working along side of their efforts, or hopefully creating a platform of my own.
I hope to learn much more about my own love for fashion through others expression of their love of it too! Stay tuned for my weekly Tuesday posts of how the Fashionistas and Fashionistos of Kent State University show their love for fashion.
