Hola, My fellow college Fashionistas/os! I am Karisma Dorsey a senior Public Relations major at Bowie State University. I am elated to be a Style Guru this semester ! The opportunity to combine fashion, photography and writing is my ideal working environment.
The visual arts (dance music and photography) are something I have always had an interest in. I only took ballet once when I was six and I haven’t played an instrument since the seventh grade. Therefore, fashion has always come first. I gather inspiration daily from the streets of Baltimore and my sisters. We each have very different styles,so I am always astounded at how each of us style one piece of clothing. When I am not clothes swapping with my sisters it’s with my boyfriend. I constantly borrow his old T-shirts to wear with my jersey skirts or flannels for a bathing suit cover up. He knows that when I buy clothes for him, it’s really for me to borrow later.
Another source of inspiration are from the books I read. My book of meditations, Acts of Faith, helps to keep my mind clear and focused—two very important things when I am trying to be chic, comfortable and still make it to class on time! I am always wearing my crystal necklace that was handmade by my boyfriend. Whenever I wear it I instantly feel calmer. Most recently I have been obsessed with canvas shoes and own enough pairs to get me through each day of the week.
My personal style includes a lot of neutral tones, eclectic prints and turquoise. I love the finished look of a white T-shirt with printed pants and/or shoes. However, I find mixing prints just as fun! So, I often have different prints within the same color family. Most days I keep it simple and comfortable for class. Boyfriend jeans are fashionable and comfortable and easily transition from day to night. Here I styled mine with a crop top, plaid shirt, canvas shoes and a neon turquoise bag. College life is hectic when you have a full class schedule, are a Resident Assistant and most importantly being cool, calm and chic. Here’s to an awesome semester—I am so excited to showcase what the beautiful people of BSU have to offer !
