Hey there Fashionistas/os! My name is Kate (well, Katherine when I’m in trouble) and I am so excited to kick off my internship with CollegeFashionista! I am currently a junior at the University of South Carolina majoring in fashion merchandising and minoring in studio art with a concentration in graphic design. I love to eat, drink, dance, travel, write, draw, paint and shop. I find comfort in fresh manicures, color-coordination, chocolate, books and shoes. I am a firm believer in the importance of adventures, 30 second dance parties, a black wardrobe and a colorful life.
Whether I was ever consciously aware of it or not, I have always had a keen passion for fashion. In addition to my life-long love of playing dress-up, I avidly played “Sims” just to create a wardrobe for my characters, my science notes were covered with doodles of dresses and shoes, my freshman year theatre monologue was Miranda Priestly’s rant about cerulean and I once saved four months’ worth of lunch money to buy my first pair of high-fashion riding boots (after looking back and realizing how much of a budding Fashionista I was, I’m surprised I wasn’t Carrie Bradshaw or Anna Wintour for middle school career day).
Because I attended private schools with required uniforms for the first 18 years of my life, I learned at a young age that details, accessories and shoes are key ingredients in the making of the perfect look. Though I tried to cheat the system and express myself (much to the dismay of the dress coding faculty members), I never truly got the chance to fully develop into my own distinctive style until I got to college. Now I can freely and confidently sport my own style, which is a combination of traditional, girly, preppy, edgy, grunge, alternative and whatever else you can think of. My current outfit is inspired by the return of retro, which means off-the-shoulder blouses, loose bottoms, chunky sling back sandals and simple chokers, with a modern touch of a 21st century Tory Burch clutch and Posie K liquid matte lipstick.
The past two years at the University of South Carolina have opened my eyes to new styles and fashions, and enthused the development of my personal style. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a Style Guru for the CollegeFashionista team, and share the myriad of different outfits, styles and trends that I find on campus with you all!
