Hey all! My name is Katie Higgins, and I am a junior studying fashion design at the State University of New York at Oneonta. When I am not studying, I play women’s lacrosse for SUNY Oneonta. I love being a student athlete. In addition, I am a member of the student fashion society at Oneonta. I even designed for their spring fashion show this past semester! I am so honored and excited to be a Style Guru for this upcoming semester. This semester is particularly special to me because I will be studying abroad in Florence, Italy at the Instituto de Europeo di Design. I can’t wait to share the European trends with all of you! I am excited to see the differences in fashion compared to the United States and to learn as much as possible.
My interest in fashion started through my artistic abilities. I have always been an artsy, yet athletic and tom-boyish girl (an interesting combination I know). Ever since I was little my parents said I would always be drawing something and just had a creative mind. I pursued art in high school, and loved dressing up staying on top of trends or even making my own! I received best dressed in high school. I knew I wanted to go into a creative field and loved fashion, so I decided to take a chance with fashion design and I have never looked back.
My personal style has evolved in college, but can’t really be described because it is always changing. I love to rock a cool pair of sneakers, but also adore girly heels. Comfort is usually essential to me, but most importantly feeling super confident in whatever I’m wearing. Typically, I wear a great pair of jeans, a basic shirt and a killer jacket or accessory. I love finding eclectic clothes at stores people don’t usually shop at and I love thrift shops. You can find such gems there! I always put my own touch on the clothes I find there and alter them a little bit. I think fashion is all about putting your personality out there without speaking a word, and that’s what I express when I dress.
For my Style Guru Bio, I decided to wear one of my favorite outfits. I work at the Gap when I am not at school and am a huge advocate for their jeans. I am wearing a pair of their white skinny ankle jeans and a soft knit black tank top. This outfit is a favorite because it includes some of my favorite pieces from my closet. The denim jacket I am wearing from Forever 21 is my go-to. You can throw it over anything and instantly look put together. I am also wearing adidas Originals Superstar shoes.
