STYLE GURU BIO: Kayla Alvarado

It’s so good to be back, Fashionistas/os! This is my third semester as a Style Guru, and I am so excited to end my run in style and with flawless writing! I am a senior at DePaul University majoring in journalism with a minor in fandom, subcultural, and cult studies. I am a One Direction fangirl, a french fry fanatic, and a brownie lover.

When it comes to my dream career, I fantasize about working in teen magazine publishing. To work at Seventeen, Tiger Beat, or J-14 magazines would be a dream come true because I’m all about celebrity news, health advice, and fun quizzes for teen girls. I hope that my interest in lifestyle topics gets me to my dream career within the next five years, but first I need to work on being more descriptive with my writing and land a killer internship!

In my opinion, some of the best-dressed celebrities/characters out there include Kylie Jenner, Halsey, and Gossip Girl’s very own Jenny Humphrey. It is evident that my taste is pretty edgy, although I certainly don’t have the exact look that screams “edge.” I’m always told that I have an innocent, good-girl look, but I don’t like to fit into the boxes that people construct for me. I am also always trying to channel my inner edge despite the fact that I don’t live the typical edgy girl lifestyle or “look” like I’m edgy. As of right now, I’m just trying to dress the way I want and not worry about what the people I come in contact with have to say about my head-to-toe look.

Overall, my everyday look is simple, takes minimal effort, and is affordable. On a typical winter school day I’d wear a pair of ultra-stretch skinny jeans, a simple but trendy blouse, and a warm blanket scarf. An outfit like this is nice enough for classes on the city campus where I have to walk alongside bodies dressed in suits and ties, but it’s also casual enough for classes on the traditional campus.

The look I have chosen for my bio is sophisticated, polished, and has a bit of edge to it. Black is just wonderful to work with!
