Hello, world! I’m Kayla K., a bold, silly, creative, Dr.-Phil-problem-solving, loud and bodacious, fashion design major at the University of Cincinnati with a minor in marketing. I like to take oddly trendy pieces of clothing and style them into my daily outfits. I am endlessly inspired by the trends of the modern society’s street style and working those into my own designs.
I have loved fashion ever since I could walk, I made my own doll clothes of cut up pieces of random clothing. You can only imagine my mom’s dismay when she came home to find piles of cut up clothes everywhere! Next thing I knew, I was selling custom-made bowties to pair with my boring high school uniform. My peers noticed and practically began throwing their money at me for one of my bowties. From bowties, I started up a mini-business of sorts—cycling old jean jackets, shorts, skirts, etc. for my peers. They saw how I customized my own clothes by sewing and wanted me to customize their own clothing!
My artistic ability is not only prevalent in my fashion sense. I have been drawing since the age of nine. I was more into painting and using pastels before I discovered the world of charcoal and markers. When I was not in school or hanging out with my peeps, I would be alone somewhere, conjuring up still life portraits, fashion illustrations, celebrity-inspired drawings, etc. I have been granted many opportunities to illustrate logos for local businesses, to design birthday cakes for close acquaintances and to designing prom dresses.
One of my favorite things to do is go thrift shopping. They have many assortments of items you can buy for cheap. Most of the time, I buy the clothes and change them up a little. I enjoy that so much because I know I won’t see anyone else with what I have on. If you were to take a look into my wardrobe, you will see a lot of loud and bold pieces. Take the pictures in the above carousel for example: black chunky heel boot to distressed high-waisted jeans to black Marilyn Monroe sweatshirt. I’m infatuated with how I can take a simple garment and style it in different ways. I tend to bring a lot of who I am into the way I dress. And if I do say so myself, I look BOMB!
I intend to enhance the qualities, skills, and talents that I already have under my belt to become the vibrant, influential fashion designer I aspire to be. I am honored to share my passion for fashion with the Fashionistas and Fashionistos of the college campuses. So look out world, Kayla K. is on the move!
