Hey Fashionistas! My name is Kayla Parker, and I’m currently a sophomore at Tulane University in New Orleans. Living in a place like this one, it’s almost impossible not to be inspired by all of the vibrant creativity and genuine fun-loving attitude this city has to offer. It makes me want to wear pieces and create outfits that are as blissful and festive as the people and places that surround me.
Growing up in a small, rural town outside of Boston, I was always looking for ways spice up my day-to-day life. I found that doing so through fashion made every day just a little bit more exciting. Deciding to slip on that new strappy sundress, or my trusty pair of studded combat boots let me imagine myself in glamorous places, doing glamorous things. Although at times I seemed a little out of place wearing a pair of faux leather shorts to class, I loved every minute of it.
Now that I live in New Orleans, my style has definitely become a little more laid-back as I switch out my fur parkas for flowy shorts and floral crop tops. Whereas I used to gravitate more towards dark colors and edgy fabrics, I now find myself picking out more bohemian and girly pieces that reflect how happy it makes me to be living where I am. I am currently obsessed with Free People (it’s kind of a given) and the gorgeous dresses and rompers they have in their current collection, like this one. But what makes me really excited about fashion is when I get to sift through thrift shops and vintage stores and find a few gems that are truly unique. If there’s a Buffalo Exchange within 20 miles, you’ll most definitely find me there.
The outfit I’m wearing here is definitely a go-to look for me. I absolutely love rompers because they’re so easy to style, but it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll look ultra-chic. I always like to keep my accessories simple, choosing either a statement necklace like this or a pair of larger earrings, like these. I’m wearing wedges here, but you’ll almost always see me in sandals, despite the fact that I’m five feet tall and could really use the extra height. Some say “beauty is pain” but that is definitely not a quote I like to live by. One of my favorite trends right now is the gladiator sandal, which you can find just about anywhere nowadays. They’re definitely a staple in my wardrobe.
After experiencing all of the quirky and creative Fashionistas (and Fashionistos) I see around campus and this city, I can’t wait to share their styles with you all and I’m so excited to experience more amazing fashion this semester.
