Style and fashion is a concept that is constantly changing in accordance to who we are becoming and how we would like the world perceive who we are. Mixing and matching styles, fabrics, patterns and shapes in order to create what we believe to be a flawless look is something that fascinates me about the world of fashion. No two looks are the same because even the slightest changes can take a look to a whole new level of chicness. My name is Kelsey Cadenas and I am pursuing a career in Fashion Marketing and Management at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Growing up, I would have never believed anyone if they had said that I would pursue a career in fashion because fashion was something that I found to be trivial and boring at a very early time in my life. I was the stereotypical tomboy who loved to play rough with all the boys during recess and the one to carry walkie talkies in the bubblegum pink kitty purse my mom forced me to wear as a way of trying to put girl stuff on me. I hated everything about it. Eventually, growing up with three very girly older sisters and multiple subscriptions to NYLON, Seventeen, Teen Vogue and Glamour magazine, I eventually realized fashion was something that I could say I was truly passionate about. It’s the type of passion that no other career path would make me feel. Plus, who doesn’t want to look on fleek at all hours of the day?
My original plan, as the plan of many people my age, was to become the coveted doctor of the family. It’s a career that was safe enough to guarantee me a job at the end of graduation, but sometimes playing it safe is not meant for everyone. Taking risks is a very big part of life, but so are regrets. I did not want to live my life wondering “what if” and compromise my happiness for something I knew I would hate to be doing for the rest of my life. Yeah, going after your dream career can get you disapproving looks from some people, but fashion is something that has taught me so much about myself and about this new world that I would not trade for anything else.
Just like fashion itself, my style is constantly changing with me and with the weather, of course. I like to experiment with new looks and colors no matter how crazy they may be. Right now, I am definitely digging dark toned lipstick, mock turtleneck shirts and all things fringe because who doesn’t think fringe is fabulously chic? I can’t wait to share many more inspirational looks brought to you by the trendy students of SCAD. Cheers to another very much anticipated semester with CollegeFashionista!
