Hey everyone! My name is Kelsey, but everyone calls me Kels. I’m a California-born Midwest native living in downtown Detroit! I’m working towards my Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance and will be graduating in May of 2018.
Living in Detroit has influenced a ton of my stylistic choices, especially since moving here for college. Detroit is undergoing a lot of positive change and reformation, so the vibe of the area is changing with it as well. Dance brings me a huge amount of confidence, and with this comes my edgy side. At the same time, I am heavily influenced by the hipster grunge aesthetic of Detroit. Lastly, a majority of my style is based on comfort and athleticism because of how often I’m dancing and training!
In this look I’m wearing thrifted, comfortable mom jeans with a mesh Champion dress tucked in as a tank top. To add edge to the outfit, I’m wearing a Blank NYC Leather Jacket with silver hardware and black Steve Madden booties, also with silver zippers, to tie the outfit together. I am wearing all of my sterling silver rings that I wear everyday, one of which I bought at Detroit’s Eastern Market, sporting the handmade Detroit “D” with me everywhere I go – Detroit pride!
When I’m not at home, I’m a huge traveler! This past summer I studied dance abroad in Lucca, Italy for three weeks. Style from abroad is so different from our trends here in the United States, and I was so inspired and excited about European fashion. Traveling itself is a huge part of who I am now. In high school I spent a month in Zambia, Africa for missions work. I now travel to and from New York and California often for school, dance, and family purposes. My advice to anyone, whether its for school, fashion, experience, or whatever reason you can find…TRAVEL! See the world! Learn something new. Eat a new food. Buy a pair of shoes from a foreign designer. Life is so amazing when you take the time to do what you love and live for yourself and your experiences. I dance because I LOVE it. I dress how I do because it’s what makes ME feel good. That’s my advice to anyone and everyone, live how you want while you can; you will never be happier!
