Hello fellow Fashionistas/os! My name is Kimberly Mehrtens and I am a junior at Northeastern University in Boston, dual-majoring in Journalism and Media and Screen Studies. This will be my second semester writing as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista and I am thrilled!
During my first semester as a Style Guru, I used the internship as an opportunity to not only discover new fashion ideas, but as also a means to challenge my introverted nature. Within this role I have been able to meet and speak to so many amazing students in Boston that I would have never come across otherwise. That is because fashion is a discussion. There are always new trends or resurrections of classic looks, but it’s our interpretations and confidence that make the outfits fashionable. Speaking with other college students, I found that simply asking about an outfit can transition easily into a conversation about personality, beliefs and lifestyle.
Growing up, I have never been the “Fashionista” of my class. I would thumb through endless magazines admiring the clothing and makeup, but I generally stuck with a sweatshirt and jeans for my day-to-day. Yet, living in Boston has encouraged me take more control over my wardrobe. Everyday, I see amazing outfits and experimental looks that inspire me to have as much fun as I can with my appearance. Lately, I find myself attracted to more classic styles like the red lip, cat eye makeup, high necklines and high-waisted clothing. To make it modern, I’ll generally throw on a graphic print, funky jewelry or somehow add in a cropped top. I truly believe that dressing for yourself is the most stylish thing you can do. If you feel like you look good, then you do.
Look out for my weekly street style posts on Fridays! I cannot wait to capture the unique style of Boston fashion once again.
