STYLE GURU BIO: Kori Clay

Hello Fashionistas/os! My name is Kori Clay and I am eager to start the semester as a Style Guru! I am a sophomore from St. Louis attending the University of Missouri-Columbia, where I am pursuing a degree in Journalism and a minor in Business.

My hobbies include; reading, watching Adventure Time, listening to Chance the Rapper and drinking tea. A LOT of tea. I also like to run, but that only happens on rare occasions.

Now of course this wouldn’t be a Fashionista post without discussing my background in fashion and well, my fashion experience is that of a sad one. *Cue sad violins*

I started becoming aware of my style around middle school—a pretty awkward time in everyone’s life. I set out to make my own style and ended up lost in the “Jerking Movement” of bright skinny jeans, graphic T-shirts, Converse and the flat bangs my cousin cut to hide my embarrassing acne. I do not know who I thought I was, but all I can say is that it was an incredibly low point in my life. My style was replicated and was not really my own. I was stuck in the abyss of trends, and it wasn’t until I started reading issues of Vogue and Ebony where I discovered what “staple pieces” were.  For those who do not know, a fashion staple is a classic item that never goes out of style. *Cue the Jefferson Theme song*

It wasn’t until I understood how to pair trendy items with wardrobe staples when it all started to make sense to me. My current style can be described as classic and comfortable. I’ll opt for flats and sneakers any day over heels. Here I am wearing Dolce Vita flats, a skirt borrowed from my mom’s closet (shh), a Fossil watch, a purse from Nine West and an Old Navy denim jacket that I have had since eighth grade.

I plan on shaking my style up a little bit more this semester and taking inspiration from almost anywhere. I cannot wait to document new trends and I hope that you join me on this adventure by checking out my articles every month. Hopefully you can gain some inspiration, too!
