HI! I’m Kylie Dougherty, a senior Fashion Merchandising major at Virginia Commonwealth University with a minor in General Business. Photography, writing and social media are three things that control my creative space, time and passion. It was only right that I pursue an internship that capitalizes on the three. And what makes it better that it all falls under the fashion umbrella?
Growing up in good ol’ Northern Virginia, I explored and diversified myself in everything from classes to sports. I knew I had creativity, but I had no idea what to do with it. I took a love for shopping (it’s got to start somewhere, right?) and turned it into research and an application. I had a little blue binder full of cut-outs, colors and H&M gift cards that sparked and inspired ANY type of creativity. My acceptance into the VCU Fashion Merchandising program was just the right channel for creativity I was looking for.
As of now, I’m taking the summer to travel, work and intern. I’ve handled different social media accounts for various businesses, including my school’s fashion department, over the past several years and I spend a lot of my free time in the gym and cleaning my room. And of course need to tell you about my favorite bag, the Hello Shanghai Cruz Takeout Box (Google it, you won’t regret it). I love Starbucks per typical stereotype, but I also don’t discriminate against other coffee.
In the fashion industry it’s fascinating to see a whole generation’s style influenced by one sole individual (thank you very much Mr. and Mrs. West). It’s interesting to watch trends come and go and how people respond to and keep up with it. What I love about fashion is that nothing is right or wrong—it’s completely open for interpretation and that it takes an open mind to fully grasp it. What’s fashionable to you may be nauseating to the next person. Fashion mimics individuals in society in a colorful way and since we have to wear clothes anyway might as well do it the way we like it, right?
If you like my look, click on the blue throughout the article to shop the items I’m wearing. I am looking forward to sharing with you all things fashion over the next several months. Stay tuned!
