STYLE GURU BIO: Lauren Padilla

Hi everyone! My name is Lauren Padilla, and I’m a rising sophomore at Johns Hopkins University. I’m currently pursuing a double major in writing seminars and English, with a minor in marketing and communications. My interests include writing, art, politics and business. My ultimate goal is to work in fashion editing and publications.

Aside from my work as a Style Guru, I serve as a regular columnist for The Republican, a Massachusetts-based newspaper company. I also work as a contributing writer for Elite Daily and Examiner.com. My pieces have been featured by a variety of other publications and news outlets—from National Public Radio to Teen Ink. In addition to my love of writing, I have a passion for style and art. My fashion designs have won national and international competitions, and brands like Yumi Kim and Kenley Collins have featured my style illustrations on their social media accounts.

I would describe my style as mix of classic and eclectic. When choosing an outfit, I love to incorporate a variety of styles into my look. Since first reading Charlotte Smith’s Dreaming of Dior several years ago, I’ve been infatuated with vintage clothing. Unlike today’s fast-fashion garments, each article of vintage clothing has its own unique history and background. Whenever I can, I try to integrate vintage pieces into my outfits. As much as I adore vintage clothing, I also appreciate streamlined, tailored pieces like crisp Oxford shirts and sheath dresses. My favorite contemporary designers include Carolina Herrera and Diane von Furstenberg.

I feel that this look truly exemplifies my personal style. I’ve paired a simple black A-line skirt with a classic white button-down. The scarf and handbag are both vintage. The color-blocked sweater, glasses and flats help to pull the outfit together.
