My name is Leala Marlin, (like the fish), and I was born and raised in Tennessee. The beautiful rolling hills and greenery are things I have grown to love, and I couldn’t imagine being away from them for long. However, I believe that traveling is something that everyone should do at some point. I plan to join the Peace Corps after I graduate from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, but fashion has always been a huge passion of mine.
I grew up with three sisters, each with a different personality. Because of this, each of them developed their own unique style. I went through life knowing there was no correct way to dress myself and that if you wear something with confidence, you can wear whatever you want.
It was also amazing to discover that I didn’t have to confine myself to one style. Boho-chic one day and classic monochrome the next are just the beginning of my closet. The outfits I create are always dependent on my mood, and today I was feeling professional but flirty. I achieved this by pairing a casual black blazer with a pair of bold black and white leggings. To add a pop of color, I used a vibrant red lipstick.
My mother was always very supportive of my fashion decisions, even if it wasn’t a style that she approved of. She always encouraged me to explore every facet of my own life. By doing this, I was able to make so many discoveries, and I was able to grow in ways I didn’t think were possible.
I have learned that people are my passion, and that is what I will look for in continuing this column. Individuals who are doing what they love in the simplest of terms stand out the most to me. Those who have the confidence to pursue their passions will always be able to develop a sense of individuality, and that is what I will search for all summer. I will portray their stories through fashion to the best of my ability.
