STYLE GURU BIO: Lindsay Yates

Hello, everyone! My name is Lindsay, and this is my second semester with College Fashionista. I will be a sophomore this fall at Columbia College Chicago, and I am majoring in fashion business. A possible career I want to pursue is a stylist. This past summer, I worked at a retail store where my job title was in fact a stylist. Customers came in looking for clothes all over the spectrum, from back to school looks to special occasion dresses they can wear to a wedding. It was my job to help them find those items. What I loved most about working was seeing the customer falling in love with an item of clothing and having a huge smile on their face. I realized not only do i love sharing my interest and knowledge of fashion with others, but that seeing people confident and completely owning what they are wearing is empowering.

And that’s why I like fashion. It can really spark up your confidence. When I wear something I love, I stand up a little straighter, smile a little more and perhaps speak a little louder. But, in order for me to maintain this confidence I don’t follow the crowd all the time. If there is a trend that everyone is wearing but I don’t like, I simply don’t wear it because I know I won’t feel confident in it. Some people feel their best in sweatpants, while others do in a dress and heels. But hey, if you love what you put on your body, that’s all that matters.

I get most of my style inspiration from Instagram. I follow brands like ASOS and Nasty Gal, as well as fashion bloggers. My outfit in these photos feature some of my favorite trends mixed with a few staple pieces. Lately, I have been loving denim skirts and chokers. A staple in my closet would be black booties, which I wear year round. My go-to “uniform” as I call it is black pants, black booties, and literally any top I can find. I love having a go-to outfit like this that I can grab for those early class days. In this outfit, I paired my denim skirt with a sheer white blouse that can be paired with anything, and my blue reflective sunglasses that I probably wear too much.
I am so excited to capture my fellow classmates looks this semester and perhaps inspire you to stand out and be confident in what you’re wearing.
