STYLE GURU BIO: Lynette Flores

It was 2008, and I was sprinting toward my mailbox. I was fresh off the bus from school and eager for the crisp, glossy pages of Teen Vogue. Hayden Panettiere was the lucky cover girl, and I stared back in awe. It was then that I knew that I would dedicate every second of every day to get behind those glossy pages. The production, the layout, the writing, the beauty editor, the creative director: someday somehow, I promised myself that I would be part of this world that seemed too far to grasp.

My 12-year-old obsession with Teen Vogue grew, and it spread to Seventeen, then Instyle and Vogue, and even Cosmopolitan when I’d sneak it out of my mother’s room. I was addicted; these pages were art to me. Every new Harper’s Bazaar cover was a vision of glamour and beauty, a masterpiece per se. I knew what I wanted to do since I was 12, but back then I didn’t know I could make it a reality.

The world of fashion has always enticed me. Fashion has it’s own life and I always wanted to be a part of it. As I get older, I’m becoming more comfortable in my skin and as a result I’ve been more comfortable to try new looks both risqué and obscure. I love how fashion can give you a feeling of empowerment and how your style can change day-to-day depending on your mood. My go to outfit lately has been simple yet chic. My black leather jacket has become my staple. I throw it on to upgrade a simple outfit. My black suede boots are my favorite for the cold season and I absolutely think that everyone should own a pair of black jeans! They go with everything and can be worn from day to night, perfect when your schedule is a balancing act of classes, work and a social life. The struggle is real in college, but I know it will all pay off in the future.

I plan on conquering New York City one Cosmopolitan at a time (the magazine, of course, not the drink). I aspire to work behind the scenes in the magazine industry to focus on fashion and beauty and discover what suits me best. Although I’m not in New York (yet), I’m attending the Pennsylvania State University where I’m currently majoring in journalism with minors in sociology and Spanish. As a junior in college, I am beginning to develop a more concrete sense of what I want for my future and how I can get there.
