It was spring 2007, and I was wrapping up my elementary school career. At the end of fifth grade, each student had to select an iconic American to create a life size figure of and to write a short biographical piece about. Being fashionably late, per usual, I was one of the last people to select my person. I struggled to find someone who inspired me as I sat at one of the computers in my classroom, aimlessly scrolling through a list of “Woman Who Changed the World.” I finally came across a photo of a woman in a little black dress and hat, I was intrigued. I began to read the short bio on this mysterious woman, reading her name “Coco Chanel.” It said that this woman changed the world of fashion. I was officially hooked. I begged my teacher to allow me to do my project on the French fashion icon, and she agreed. And thus, began my love for fashion. Ever since I’ve been inspired, not only by Chanel but by the fashion industry as a whole. These experiences have brought me here, my first semester of being a CollegeFashionista Style Guru!
Now that you know a little bit about what brought me here, let me introduce myself. My name is Lyuba, and I am currently a sophomore at Mount Holyoke College studying romance languages and economics. My romance languages major has helped me begin to appreciate fashion even more, because as I study different languages I have realized that fashion allows people to make connections, despite having a language barrier. I find it amazing how fashion brings people from across the globe together, through fashion shows and now through social media. Take CollegeFashionista for example, a site designed to help bring college students from across the country together under fashion: amazing.
The outfit I am wearing here brings attention to my true obsession: shoes. Recently, I have found that statement shoes are my go-to because they can bring life to any outfit, even one as simple as jeans and a T-shirt. Here, I make my metallic platform oxfords the focal point. Platforms shoes are on the rise, and I can’t get enough of them. In this look I brought together some of my favorite looks of the season. I layered boyfriend jeans over fishnet tights with an asymmetric tunic on top, combining my feminine side with a little bit of a tomboy edge. I topped it off with a lilac faux fur jacket to add some color and also to make it wearable in this freezing Michigan weather. What I love most about this season’s trends is the concept of layering; it’s perfect for these next few winter months to go from frigid to fashionable within seconds by just taking off a layer.
