As Neiman Marcus once said, “Women who wear black lead colorful lives.” I feel like this saying should have been scripted onto my birth certificate. A call to action of sorts, to make it my life’s mission to prove that girls who wear black aren’t necessarily gothic and grungy. I’d like to think that I’ve been proving the stereotype on black wrong with my sassy attitude and upbeat spunk since 1994. Fast-forward to 2016 and I’m more than excited to be sharing my stylistic vision and inspiration through CollegeFashionista in my first semester of being a Style Guru.
As a senior communications major at the University of Kentucky, I have a passion for living a healthy and hectic lifestyle. I thrive on a booked calendar and a fresh pair of Nikes. I swear that I have a NYC paced state of mind stuck in a southern city. While I love the sweet charm of living in Kentucky, my style tends to veer far from any typical southern belle. While I’ve reveled in dressing up in the most glamorous of ways since I could walk, my ensembles haven’t always exactly been sundresses and pearls. I would describe my style as sophisticated, yet sassy and feminine, yet fitted. I am drawn to sleek and polished designs in neutral colors that add flare with dramatic details like cutouts, lace, a unique fit or a small embellishment.
For this look I wore one of my favorite outfits, a black romper with lace details & an open back from one of my favorite local boutiques in Lexington. For accessories, I kept up the subdued drama with a black and maroon studded handbag paired with lace-up heels. I kept the jewelry simple with a pair of black dangling earrings and an initialed leather bracelet. I love this look for the way that it shows drama and romantic femininity without being flashy or over the top.
I’m so excited for summer 2016 and look forward to sharing my fashion favorites as a Style Guru this semester!
