Hey #GuruGang! My name is Mae and I am unbelievably excited to begin my first semester with CollegeFashionista. I’m a little hapa (half Chinese and half Irish) from Rhode Island ready to embark on my new journey! I am currently a freshman studying in our nation’s capital, Washington, DC, at American University. But what I’m studying is another story. I have so many passions and interests I want to study. But they say that’s what freshman year is all about and you’ll eventually figure it out…right? I hope so. But, in the mean time, I plan on double majoring in law and society and PR/communications. You can find me studying in my favorite coffee shop or going on photoshoots in the city.
Throughout the semester you’ll learn that I don’t categorize myself to one box—I’m one person with a plethora of passions and interests that form my daily actions and, of course, my style. I divert from trends and avoid wearing pieces simply because of their brand. The majority of my favorite clothing items are thrifted, exuding my eclectic style. I find inspiration from anything and everything. I find inspiration in wearing used clothing that hold experiences you will never encounter. I’m that girl where you’ll ask me where I got my sweater and I’ll reply (nonchalantly) with a shrug and say “my dad’s closet,” or “the men’s section of Savers.” I am a huge bargainer and that is shown in my style. There is so much beauty in thrifted items, whether it is from your local Savers or from a vintage shop that showcases items from every decade.
For this outfit, I am wearing a vintage sweater (from the 80’s) that has bat wing sleeves and a turtleneck. I paired this sweater with my favorite pair of high waisted, black skinny jeans and black booties (an essential for your closet!) I finished off the look with my favorite wide brim fedora from the Goorin Bros, a vintage brown chiffon skinny scarf and my gold watch from Michael Kors.
As always, if you ever want to chat or join me as I explore my new city, follow me on my social media accounts! (My favorites are Instagram and Snapchat— what are yours?) As I log off for now, I will leave you with some food for thought that lead me to this amazing opportunity with CollegeFashionista: Always strive to push yourself to try new and spontaneous things. Without doing so, you’d never know what you will discover about yourself and the opportunities that will follow.
