Hello all of you Fashionistas and Fashionistos! My name is Martha Appiah and I have literally been wearing heels since I was born. I wish I were kidding but, I tell you that, I most definitely am not kidding. Not even a little. At 5’5”, I am the shortest person in my family (by about four inches). I am certain that between the height differences, the heels and my love for all things creative, rose my love for fashion. Though I am certain that I could talk anyone’s ear off when it comes to fashion, but like most things in life, it’s better off to start slow.
First off, I am a college lifestyle blogger and I write under the name Le Northern Belle. I am also a fourth-year student at the University of Waterloo (which is in Canada) and I am studying both Kinesiology (BSc) and Speech Communication (BA). My program is five years, so luckily for me, I kind of get to be a senior twice. Five-year degree programs are pretty common in Canada, especially at schools that have a coop/internship program incorporated into the degree. I had originally come to University of Waterloo to pursue a degree in Kinesiology, in hopes of becoming a physiotherapist. However, I eventually learned that though I love the things I was learning, I couldn’t exactly see myself working as a physiotherapist for the rest of my life. Reason number one was that I love to be creative, and in a field like Kinesiology/PT, you don’t exactly get the opportunity to “put your own spin” on things. Reason number two was that as comfy as fitness/athleisure clothing is, I could not have that be my everyday work clothes. I need my skirts and my heels and my blazers and the list just goes on! So when I decided to do a double degree by adding a communication program, in hopes of pursuing a career in public relations, everyone and their mothers knew that was the perfect career for me.
So how would one describe me? Well, to my friends, I am most definitely the most random and quirkiest person around, but who says that’s a bad thing? Be who or what you want to be and do it unapologetically (as long as it’s not hateful because then you should probably not do that). Every morning when I wake up, I think about the person I want to be and I tailor my outfit to that idea; whether it be edgy, girly or laid back. My personal style changes from day-to-day, but it pretty much bounces between a preppy and a minimalistic style. Regardless what outfit I am wearing, you can usually guarantee that pops of colour will be subtly or hugely incorporated. It just brightens my day to have some colour. For this outfit, I paired my bright pink kate spade bag with a navy dress, tucked into a black skater skirt and tied together with a rose gold Fossil watch.
