STYLE GURU BIO: Mary Nealon

Hey to all you Fashionistas/os out there!  My name is Mary Nealon, and I am a junior at Sacred Heart University studying Marketing and Fashion Merchandising. Since I’ve never really blogged before, I’m ecstatic to be part of the CollegeFashionista spring 2015 team, as a Style Guru, to see what it’s all about.  I can’t wait to capture the unique personal styles of those around me and to share that with readers. Check back in each week to see my latest inspiration!

I didn’t always dream of diving into the fashion world. It wasn’t until I got my first subscription to Teen Vogue and saw then-rising models like Karlie Kloss and Chanel Iman totally rocking any piece of clothing put on them, that I fell in love. I’m now fashion obsessed and on my way to (hopefully) a career in the industry. I was lucky enough to intern at NYC fashion brand management firm Launch Collective—an experience that made me even more educated and energized about the industry. I did everything from helping a fainting model at a fashion show to collaborating on marketing plans for emerging designers. My internship taught me so much about actually working in the industry and that it is indeed just that—a lot of work! I now know how important it is to be educated and up to date on what is going on, so websites like Women’s Wear Daily, Business of Fashion, Style and Fashionista have become my fashion bibles. This past semester was an exciting whirlwind and went by too fast.

Although my personal style is forever evolving, I would say I currently aim for a mix of normcore, urban vibes, and vintage accents. I love a good head-to-toe black outfit, especially after working behind the scenes at this past New York Fashion Week, where all-black was the uniform.  Some of my current obsessions include Coco Rocha (forever muse), black ankle boots, Ryan Roche sweaters (I wish!) and fun matching sets.

Of course we all have our favorite stores that we frequent and luxury collections that we drool and dream over.  However, the real magic of fashion is how we transform what we buy and how we integrate those high-end looks that inspire us into our own closets.  That’s why I’m so excited to write and photograph the style around me.
