Hey Fashionista/os! My name is Megan Janssen, and I am thrilled to begin writing for CollegeFashionista while tackling my first semester as a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Although I am indecisive as ever, I plan on studying communications and international studies (this will most likely change before semester break, so stay tuned.)
Because of my passion for travel, I have developed a style that continuously evolves to adapt to the different places/cultures I experience. My inspiration for this look, and some of the actual pieces, comes from my travels to Europe this past month. While abroad, I was constantly taken aback by the impossibly effortless street style of both European men and women alike. Specifically, my time spent in multiple Scandinavian countries revealed to me how it is possible for someone to make even a pair of sweatpants appear runway worthy. What struck me the most about this chic street style was the utter simplicity of each look. The Scandinavians have a way of styling the most basic and comfortable pieces to perfection.
Arguably, my favorite European style trend I saw almost everyone rocking was sneakers/slip-ons. While this casual footwear can be found in the States, Europeans take this trend to another level. Rarely did I see any women wearing sandals or espadrilles despite the calendar date. Instead, these stylish Scandinavians opted for a cool pair of slide-ons or sneakers that somehow made their outfits all the more fashionable. Who knew—a trend that puts comfort first but does not compromise style (Americans take note!)
For my look, I aimed to replicate chic European street style by incorporating new pieces from my favorite Scandinavian brand with two of my go-to Aritzia basics. I paired my new denim jeans with a crop knit sweater and moto jacket for a casual but cool look. My new burgundy sneakers, however, take my outfit to the next level without looking like I gave any effort—and the best part is I really did not. This outfit is perfect for transitioning into the chilly fall weather of the Midwest that is soon to come.
I am so thankful to have been given the opportunity to be a part of CollegeFashionista, and I cannot wait to share my articles with you all!
