STYLE GURU BIO: Melina Dania

I am in love with this world. I am in love with the people that it is made up of. I am in love with the unmeasurable amount of cultures. Coming from a French/Syrian family, my tastes in clothing is very blended. I reach for typical striped Parisian tops and blouses, but I also love to add in a surprising twist such as complicated gladiator sandals and sheer pieces.  Culture plays a major role in the person that I am and also the person that I wish to be. I always say, the way I dress that day is the person that I want to be. If I dress like a Greek princess, guess what, I’m going to BE a Greek princess. And a rad one too.

Since I am a fashion designer and the atélier is my play room, I take inspiration from everything around me. Fashion design has helped me through the toughest points of my life. Nothing feels better than perfecting a french seam or adding the finish touches to a gown. As a fashion designer I love Alexander McQueen, Oscar de la Renta and, of course, Chanel. Spring collections are my favorite as they require the most handiwork.  I aspire to become a fashion designer to show others what goes on in my mind and to empower those who wear my clothes.

The very thought of being able express myself through what I wear or what I choose to show the world overwhelms me…in a good way. My style has swayed very much over my high school and college careers. I remember in high school, lace and feminine pieces were my favorite and I would never look at anything black in the department stores. And then slowly (very, very slowly) I began to care less what other people thought and I started to dress more for me. When beginning college in the fall, I started to notice that my other classmates were wearing outfits that I coveted as well. I began to mimic these outfits, but of course throwing in some Melina-esque statement pieces. I live in my leather jacket from AllSaints and my combat boots. By living in a beautiful cosmopolitan city such as Boston, eyeing out the different traditions and trends in street style has become a hobby of mine.

My style now is “laid back minimalistic-chic.” Since it’s summer, I think I’ll throw in some patterned pieces. But, of course, I do not believe in setting yourself to a certain style. I think of getting ready for the day as a “pre-show,” deciding what costume to wear and how you are going to let the world see you. I can’t wait to meet others with similar fashion interests and tastes as mine, but also to meet Fashionistas that will encourage me to try new trends. I look forward to inspiring others to be bold and a little uncomfortable—because after all, it’s just clothes isn’t it?
