Hi! My name is Melissa Cavrel. I’m a junior at SUNY New Paltz. I have a major in Public Relations and minor in Political Science. This summer I’ll be returning as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista! I started last semester and am so happy to be doing this again! CollegeFashionista is such a great site and I love going out and finding amazing street style to report on.
Fashion is one of my passions and I love seeing how other people with this same passion turn it into the beautiful works of art some call outfits. In my last Style Guru bio I quoted Coco Chanel as saying “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” And I still believe every word of it. Fashion is a part of all of our worlds. Our school life, home life, and personal lives are all different worlds we exist in, and fashion exists there with us. The advice CollegeFashionista gives is useful in all of these worlds because they each come with a sort of dress code. Not necessarily a formal one, but rather one that requires us to convey our own identity. Fashion is a medium that helps us express ourselves and own unique identities. It exists all around us and really is as Coco Chanel put it always “happening.”
As our identities change during this metamorphic period in our lives, so do our styles. I still love statement necklaces, head chains and harem pants, but I’ve also developed a passion for mixed florals, nude heels and burgundy lipstick. It is important to always grow and adapt, and that is never more true than when it comes to your own personal style. Remember fashion is about passion, so express yourself! The world is your runway, now go be fabulous.
