Hello readers, Fashionistas/os and other fashion lovers! I am excited to be sharing this sartorial experience with all of you. My name is Melissa and I am a sophomore at the University of Oregon, majoring in Journalism with a minor in Product Design. I aspire to write for the fashion or living section of Vogue and provide keen insight on weddings, street style and/or little known travel spots. Designing my own line of lingerie is also a goal I would like to accomplish at some point in my career. As a Style Guru and an editorial intern for CollegeFashionista, I hope to shed some light on all the wonderful ideas and innovations us millennials bring to the table when it comes to fashion.
My love for fashion started when I was young, and although I’ve made some mistakes on the way (sweatpants every day… for a year…in third grade) I’ve learned a great deal about the importance of fashion. I’ve become fond of minimalism like many others, and find that neutral colors provide a simplistic statement while still offering a bigger story, you just have to look a bit harder. A few of my favorite designers and brands are Alexander McQueen, CHROMAT, Elie Saab, Chloé and Marchesa. I find these designers and companies produce work that is beyond the simple definition of fashion; they blur the lines of art and style by producing more than just a set of clothes. The words that fill the pages of Vogue inspire me too, and it’s enchanting how a set of lines can produce stories that leave lasting impressions or make you feel as if you’ve experienced what they discussed in their piece. I think this is what draws me most to fashion, how art, style and storytelling are blended together in a very harmonious way.
When it comes to my own personal taste and ensembles, I often find myself wearing a pair of black, high-waisted skinny jeans with heeled boots and a sweater. A lace bralette underneath and some dark, jewel-toned lips always finish off the look for me. My closet is a palette of neutrals, a gradient line from black to white (with every quiet tone in between!). With this internship, I am excited to see all the different ways people express themselves, whether it’s through shape, color (or lack thereof) or a mix of meaningful pieces. I want to bring the story out of the outfit and I am so happy you’re all along for this editorial ride. The way people dress says more about them than you might think and I’m excited to verbalize that message.
Look out for my articles on the first of every month!
