STYLE GURU BIO: Melyssa Granat

“I don’t do fashion. I am fashion.” Words to live by said by the ever-fabulous, fashion icon, Coco Chanel. It goes without saying that Chanel, in the fashion world, is the equivalent to Queen Bey, The Kardashians and Taylor Swift combined. Without her, I wouldn’t know the meaning of eternal style or what it truly means to dress classic. More importantly, that gorgeous bag wouldn’t be hanging on my arm as gracefully as a Harry Winston wreath necklace around someone’s neck.

For me, coming home from abroad meant seeing my incredible family, my home and a toasted everything flagel with iced coffee. However, I knew the summer was off to a great start when I found a wrapped black Chanel box on my bed under a 21st birthday card. #Cocomademedoit

Between a first semester overflowing with credits and a second semester spent abroad, junior year flew by. Four months in London has definitely changed me. I realize that sounds like the typical answer any college student will give you. However, I genuinely mean it. I soaked up culture, knowledge, friendships and food like a sponge—and there’s not a minute, or calorie of abroad that I would change!

I had never been to Europe before and traveling through England and the rest of world opened my eyes up to a totally new lifestyle. From leisurely dining, indulging in wine and dressing to the nine’s (ALWAYS), I think I adapted pretty well. I mean let’s be honest, who would turn down French rose and pear ravioli; shout-out to Firenze and the most decadent meal at La Giostra.

Let’s get down to business; there is no Europe without gorgeous European men and women wearing ensembles that could make even the most stylish couple envious. Following my staycation, I have noticed changes to my personal style. I’ve matured a lot, and I can see that growth in my wardrobe. A British 21-year-old looks the way I envision myself, as an American 21-year-old. So I was constantly taking mental notes, especially as I walked through Marylebone, shopped in Harrods or went out in SoHo.

This summer I took all that I had learned abroad and put it to work, especially with my outfits. Fashion icons have taught us you can never go wrong with black and white. That’s a combination that will always be chic. This A-line skirt reminds me of something Carrie Bradshaw would have worn during “An American in Paris,” part one or two. The lace crop top adds sex appeal to a rather classy look. The heels turn this skirt from something to wear at brunch at the Standard to drinks at Cipriani. The bag, well I think we already know my feelings about Chanel. But the gold hardware on the bag, the delicate gold and crystal earrings and a fun ponytail take the outfit to the next level.

My advice, if you have the chance to go abroad, do it! Learn, travel, eat, shop but most importantly LOVE every second of it.
