Hi there, my name is Mercedes Oduro and I am a new Style Guru for CollegeFashionista. I’m a freshman at George Brown College and I’m studying fashion design and techniques. I aspire to be a seamstress or fashion journalist. I hope to relieve some of the stigma associated with the arts by pursuing a career in fashion.
I am a very vibrant, upbeat soul and love to cheer people up. Apart from sewing, some of my hobbies include cooking, reading and dancing. In fact, I take salsa and bachata classes. I have a slightly unhealthy relationship with potatoes—I love them. I mean, they come in so many varieties. One interesting thing about me is that I am learning how to speak, read and write in fluent Spanish.
My style is somewhat bold and edgy. It’s bold because I love to use loud colours and prints regardless of the season, and it’s edgy because I am not really one to follow trends. It is influenced by my rich culture, which takes roots in Ghana. After having lived there for seven years, I’ve learnt to appreciate a side of me that I never even knew I had before. That trip has affected every aspect of my life, including my personal style. This is reflected partially in my outfit, with both the beads and headband hailing from Ghana. To me, denying your roots is equivalent to denying your whole existence! Embrace change, diversity and culture, because life can be as rich and fulfilling as I have found mine to be.
As a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista, I hope to break out my shell and meet some awesome new people, become more fashion literate and hopefully a little more fashion forward! Connect with me on Instagram a to get to know a little more about me.
