Hello everyone! I’m Mitali, a junior at UCLA studying Applied Mathematics and English. This relatively weird subject combination actually perfectly captures the unconventional extremity of my personality and style. I’m very bubbly, carefree and traditionally feminine in a lot of ways. I feel like this side of me is best represented through boho silhouettes, pastels, lace and intricate print. The white, lacy romper I’m wearing is a perfect example: the bell sleeves are bohemian and feature lace, and the plunge neck with my bralette makes me feel more feminine. The pastel shoes add a little more character and subtle color to my outfit, and are really practical to wear for my walk to class.
In complete contrast to this, I’m really interested in challenging traditional femininity and cultivating a more feisty personality, which is reflected in my attraction to a darker, sophisticated and more minimalist style. I exploit black leather and suede, two of my favorite fabrics, to make my outfits edgier. I avoid compromising on comfort, especially with shoes, because I really feel like fashion can be beautiful, expressive and still practical. Also, men’s clothing is really comfortable and women deserve the same comfort.
I’m from India and really like ethnic style. I love how a lot of traditional clothing uses lighter, more flowy fabrics such as chiffon and silk, or intricate ones like brocade. I’m really fond of some Indian jewelry, especially delicate anklets. Sometimes I find ways to incorporate this into my boho silhouettes, but recently my minimalist side has been taking over and I’ve experienced a departure from my Indian roots. I’ve also realized I’m more fond of formal Indian wear, which makes it hard to incorporate into everyday style.
I really do have extreme styles, and most of the times my style decisions are based on my moods. This summer I’ll possibly be backpacking in Europe and then staying in India. Consequently, I’m considering trying out a capsule wardrobe for the summer. I’m absolutely terrified, but also thrilled to take on this adventure! Check in on my posts regularly to see a variety of styles from different countries.
