Hi all! My name is Nikki Stobie, and I’m studying a Bachelor of Communication in one of the best cities in the world—Melbourne. My days are typically filled with cooking, reading, meditation, crafting, drinking tea, procrastinating by re-watching Parks and Recreation for the tenth time, tweeting and Instagramming and laying around in parks and gardens in the sunshine.
I’ll be starting off your week every Monday with outfits from the other side of the hemisphere to many of you, where it’s almost winter and about to get freezing cold. Use my articles to inspire/prepare you for your next winter adventure, or at the very least to help you appreciate your warm, summer weather even more! Melburnians are notorious for their black ensembles, and I’m no different (honestly, there have been multiple articles about this). Black is certainly my go-to; it’s what I feel the most comfortable and confident in, and I definitely don’t consider a muted colour palate depressing like some! Yet, with such a creative city comes a diverse range of individuals, each with their own unique and often eccentric style. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to showcase some of those styles for you all over the next few months.
Aside from dark colors, I’ve been through many different fashion phases—scouring op shops and thrift stores during my vintage phase; figuring out how to use the sewing machine (and begging mum for help) during my handmade phase; and cringing during my neon/fluoro phase (we’ve all blindly followed at least one fashion trend when we were younger, right?). Now that I’m older and wiser, what I wear is almost always determined by my mood that day. But my frugality is evergreen. Fortunately, living in such a way has allowed me to create a social media blog dedicated to helping others dress and live stylishly while adhering to a budget.
For a casual look on a cool day, I love combining a favourite pair of high waisted jeans with a simple yet textured top, like this ribbed turtleneck. We’ve already established that I love neutrals, so scarves and pashminas are a great way to add pops of colour and draw the eye to otherwise basic outfits. Finally, I always wear rings no matter what the occasion. I love having options to mix and match, so my latest jewellery purchases have consisted of multiple sets of stacking rings!
I can’t wait to see how my time with CollegeFashionista will influence my own style, and hopefully yours too.
