STYLE GURU BIO: Sam Yohannes

Hi Fashionistas/os! My name is Sam Yohannes and I am a third year Journalism student at Ryerson University. This is my fifth semester as a Style Guru intern and this fall, I will also be working as a Social Media intern putting my inherent millennial abilities to good use.

While working on weekly posts, I have learned that nothing really measures up to the rush that comes from achieving optimal lighting for a photo or finding an impressive subject for a style post. I currently spend copious hours fiddling with my camera and consequently, even more time on Lightroom editing photos.

My time as an intern for the site has been a period of personal growth. Applying to CollegeFashionista was a step into foreign territory and a necessary one. The job has encouraged me to attempt things I never thought I would ever do. By interacting with strangers regularly, I have unknowingly improved on my interpersonal skills.

I take style notes from every person I write about; though, I cannot pretend like I have always been in the good graces of the proverbial fashion police. Through my formative years, I have committed my fair share of fashion blunders. I thought that style in its purest form was reserved for those in the fashion industry or those coveting a position in it and, therefore, I assumed that any effort by a timid kid like me could only be in vain.

But, with some much needed exposure by way of fashion magazines and blogs (Style Rookie was very important literature), I came to realize that you don’t necessarily have to be a “fashion person” to care about fashion. It also became clear to me that style isn’t bought and that it is almost like a skill, a knack for creating looks using what is available within your means.

My style as it currently stands is a medley of elements from all the phases—awkward, mundane and all—I went through growing up. In my closet, you will now find dungarees reminiscent of a pair I sported in elementary school and several cardigans I accumulated during my “Ivy League” phase in high school, among other things. The trends I am currently hankering for are longline silhouettes and sleeveless tunics, which have recently been popping up in my closet. *Insert shrug emoji*

The CollegeFashionista crew on my campus seems to be growing larger every semester. Seeing a group of two, including myself, grow into a party of five is very exhilarating. I’m looking forward to learning about all the trendsetters I, and the fantastic Style Gurus at Ryerson, will come across this semester. Cheers to starting off the new academic year.
