“The only rule is don’t be boring and dress cute wherever you go. Life is too short to blend in”- Paris Hilton
Inspiration is often found in the most unlikely of places. If you had told me that my inspiration for my first CollegeFashionista post as a Style Guru would come from Paris Hilton, I would have said you’re crazy. However, after making a visit to my “Advice Worth Taking” Pinterest Board from high school, I have to give it to the girl- she makes a great statement here.
I took this rule to heart in sixth grade, also known as the peak of my awkward stage. I always loved clothing, but like most 11 year olds at the time, I was struggling, desperate to find my niche, and had an unfortunate affinity for double polos and Abercrombie & Fitch graphic tees. Not the most flattering look, especially not for someone under 5 ft. Luckily for me, it was during this pivotal stage in my life that my mom took it upon herself to teach me how to utilize my petite stature to my benefit. I believe her direct words were “You’re tiny- you want to be noticed? Dress well and have a big personality”. She and Paris must have been reading the same book.
After our conversation, my whole outlook changed and my love affair with fashion- not just clothing- began. Instead of continuing, to no avail, to try to look like a Hollister model, I started mixing up my wardrobe with unique pieces from Free People and tailoring old dresses/skirts of my mom’s and styling them to look current. The struggle I experienced at age eleven definitely paid off when I was voted Best Dressed my senior year of high school, and it’s ESPECIALLY paying off now that I get to be a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista- something I have dreamed about for so long!!
One of my favorite trends this season is that of the jumpsuit. I adore this piece because it’s so versatile- dress it up, dress it down- and it’s SO comfortable! As mentioned before, I love mixing the old with the new, so for this look, I styled my ASOS jumpsuit with an army green DKNY jacket, Diane von Furstenberg clutch, and black Nine West heels that were all hand-me-downs from my mom. To add to the look’s evening vibe, I added a statement necklace that I found at a local Louisville boutique.
I’m SO SO excited to be a Style Guru this fall and keep you all updated on the trends I see around campus, as well as the trends I see on my favorite people 🙂 Thank you so much for reading! Go Hoosiers!!
