STYLE GURU BIO: Shanna Merceron

Inside the mind of this Style Guru is a mess of pillows and books. Next to my mental radiator humming with sleep deprivation, is a guide on how to pull off boots in the summer and a pair of leather pants hidden under the bed from a friend who says they aren’t professional enough for work. You’ll find half finished stories and calculations scrawled on coffee shop napkins to determine if I can afford the latest contour palette. I’ve hidden the secrets to pulling off wearing heels to class within the recesses of my mind and if you ask nicely and bring me cookies, I might just spill.

My name is Shanna Merceron and this is my second semester with CollegeFashionista! (Please imagine confetti cannons blasting for my benefit). Being a Style Guru has evolved from an internship into an obsession for me, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve found myself really putting more thought into my outfits, or actually looking at the outfits that I always wear and wondering why I think they work so well. From my accessories to my shoes, (and everyone else’s) I’ve been taking notice.

My shoe collection is out of control. The other day I was at T.J. Maxx and I bought the cutest pair of studded block heels. The cashier told me she wanted to steal them, but she better not because she already has “like, 20 pairs!” I just smiled back and thought about how my shoe pile could get me on an episode of Hoarders.

I think that my style is best described as eclectic and edgy. I always prefer the color black to anything and living in Florida is a struggle for me because I can only wear boots three months a year. I love leather, studs and bell sleeves. Pair it all with a statement belt and you’re golden.

I’ve also always preferred dresses to pants. I recently had to fight a great battle to win the “no pants war” in my apartment, and eventually I managed to convince my roommates to be comfortable with me walking around without pants on. Ah, the freedom.

I think that style is what you make it, and you should always be true to yourself. Embrace who you are and accept change. Take risks in fashion, too. Not enough people do.
