Hello Fashionistas! My name is Sophia R. Ortiz, and I am very excited to be a Style Guru this semester. I grew up in Flagstaff, AZ, but I am a junior studying marketing and global business under the warm Tucson, AZ sun at The University of Arizona.
Summing up my style into a phrase or sentence has always been difficult. I like to borrow a little bit of something from everywhere. On some days it’s hipster overalls. Other days it’s a flirty dress and flats, and sometimes I just let my leather jacket and boots do all the talking. When all is said and done, something bold or classic my go-to. I love to find wild pieces and figure out how to tame them in an outfit or take a classic piece and give it more personality and flair.
That is what unfolded here as I pieced together an outfit for the afternoon. A classic black and white palette was given more personality with a twisted hair detail, a red lip, and my go-to black booties. Needless to say, winters here in Tucson don’t require too many heavy layers. We enjoy fall-like conditions in these “colder” months. Knowing this I knew that I could pair my polka-dot Kate Spade blouse with black, high-waisted shorts by simply throwing on a pair of black tights with them
As far as accessories I have Boma studs and Kate Spade bow earrings on, a few beaded bracelets from my local crystal shop, and my tan Kate Spade purse–yes, I like Kate Spade. I went with simple jewelry to pair with this classic look. The black neck-tie and texture on the shirt didn’t call for many other details. Everything matched my tan and black palette keeping it simple and intentionally leaving my lips to be the only pop of color. Even if it’s not as bold a color as red, lipstick can always tie an outfit together. One of the first lessons in fashion my mother ever taught me was to never underestimate the power of lipstick (and never leave the house without it).
