STYLE GURU BIO: Sophia Tortorella

My name is Sophia Tortorella and I’m a rising sophomore at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. I am a communications major with a concentration in journalism and a minor in fashion merchandising. For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamed of writing for a big-name fashion magazine located in New York City.

As I’ve aged, grown, matured and changed, fashion has remained a constant in my life. On my eighth birthday, my mother and I began the tradition of a birthday shopping spree. Each year, we went to a different mall to spend hours upon hours searching through stores. I usually only went home with a few new items, but I didn’t care. Window shopping quickly became a new hobby of mine, and it’s still something I love to do today.

To me, fashion is an art. I find it so fascinating to watch trends change throughout the seasons and predict what’s coming next. While I love following trends, I don’t always mimic them. If a style comes along that I’m not a fan of, I don’t shop the trend. Being my own person is of great importance to me and I think my style reflects that perfectly.
Growing up at private schools with strict uniforms, individualism was restricted. Now that I’m a college student, I love wearing my own clothes and representing my own style to my peers surrounding my campus. If I don’t feel like dressing up for class bright and early in the morning, I’ll be sure to accessorize my look for an extra flare. Each morning, I wear bracelets gifted to me by some of my closest friends from designers such as kate spade and Alex and Ani. I shop at stores like Zara and Topshop for fun socks, shoes and other accessories to keep my style edgy and fun. Even simple stores, like Target and Old Navy, have staple items that ensure I’m always looking and feeling my best through my wardrobe. I hope to use CollegeFashionista as an outlet to express my individualistic self to the world and inspire all the Fashionistas/os out there to do the same!
