STYLE GURU BIO: Sydney Brooks

Hey, hi and hello! My name is Sydney Brooks. This fall I’ll be a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh. Being a born and raised Pittsburgher, I’m ready to soak up all the inspiration the city has to offer. As a transfer student, I’m nervous but excited about what this fall will bring. I’m especially looking forward to getting to talk all things fashion with you this semester. I’ve spent some time writing for my own blog, so it’s a fresh, new opportunity to get to branch out and write for a website like CollegeFashionista!

Fashion is a funny thing. Through fashion we’re able to say so much in such an elegant, simple way. It can be a way to present the best version of ourselves by putting together the perfect outfit. It can be a comfort (I know you have a pair of lazy day sweat pants. Don’t lie). It allows us to be whoever we want to be. We can say, “I am here! I am put together! I did not sleep in until noon and then have leftover pizza for breakfast. I am a put together person!” all with that perfectly fitting pair of black jeans.

With my own style, I try to find a balance between fashion and function. Putting small twists on classic pieces is a fun way for me to maintain comfort but also mix in a bit of flair. Alexa Chung emulates this best. She does a great job of making basic colors and traditional pieces look trendy; it doesn’t hurt that she’s cooler than cool.

A trend Ms. Chung has rocked a number of times is a pair of overalls. It’s no easy feat, especially when there are so many variations. I’ve spent the past year trying to find the right pair and I’ve finally met my match. The pair I’m wearing in my outfit is so comfortable and allows me to strike the perfect balance between dressy and casual with my heels and striped shirt. I can never say no to a cat eye or a red lip, so I decided to do both for my makeup. The total result is a simple look with bold statements thrown in (that or Parisian farm-girl-chic).

Outside of fashion, I like DIYs, watching YouTube videos, running and food (bring me ramen and win my heart). I say caramel like car-mull, don’t have a preference for Coke or Pepsi and I am a dog person. I will note, however, that if you have a kitten I will happily cuddle it for you.

Resisting the urge to say “XOXO, Gossip Girl,” let me say instead that I can’t wait to get to know you better and explore the world of fashion together in the coming months. Here’s to a rad semester to come.
