STYLE GURU BIO: Taylor Hempstead

Hi everyone! My name is Taylor Hempstead as you can obviously tell from my profile and I am so excited to be writing for CollegeFashionista this summer. I am now a junior at Marist College (boy, does time fly) and I am majoring in fashion merchandising with a minor in either business or communications; I haven’t decided which yet.

Interesting enough, I used to call myself a failed fashion major, not because I wasn’t doing well in classes or because I wasn’t fashionable, but because I didn’t think I fit into the fashion major reputation. As college progressed I figured out, I don’t have to! That’s what makes fashion so interesting. I don’t dress up for class all the time; hell if I want to wear leggings and the T-shirt I slept in the night before, I will. I would much rather wear comfortable shoes (preferably Converse All-Stars or Dr. Martens) than heels and I don’t always like looking like I’ve got my whole life figured out because, to be honest, I don’t.

I can say though that I have more black pieces of clothing in my closet than a 1980s punk band. The amount of times I’ve heard, “Why is your whole closet black?” is too many to count. I don’t even know where the desire to buy black clothing originated (maybe in that awkward middle school goth phase I had… eek!), but either way I’m glad it did. As we all know, black will always be a staple color and in my own style, black will always be the new black.

I think the reason I love black so much is because it can encompass any style: goth, retro, vintage, rocker, classic and bohemian. I myself cannot limit myself to one style. Some days I take the classic approach and draw inspiration from icons such as Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn, while other days I look like I just walked out of the ’90s and I absolutely love it! However, my favorite style as of now is a more edgy and rebellious look. I mean, who wouldn’t want to look like a modern day James Dean. Having different styles makes fashion even more fun. It’s almost like playing dress up except, together all these styles are YOU! Pretending I just came from a car hop in the ’50s, fashion brings me such happiness and hopefully I’ll be able to share this with you this summer.

So there’s a little bit about me and my style. I hope you enjoyed reading it and I look forward to sharing my thoughts with all you fashion lovers out there!!
