As spring temperatures rise, it is time for Fashionista/os to shed those winter layers and bring out their best looks for the season. As I began to observe the fashion of others around me, I could not help but notice the influence that ’70s style has brought to 2016. Whether it be flare pants, bold prints or bohemian silhouettes, they all can be seen in today’s current trends. The rise in ’70s trends is what made the alice + olivia pre-fall 2016 collection stand out to me and become the inspiration behind my latest outfit. Their collection has been described as “grandma-chic”, and while that may be because most of us associate the ’70s as being a different era, there is no denying a ’70s presence in recent fashion trends.
alice + olivia does a great job of mixing textures and prints. The different textures include suede, sequin, denim and heavy knit pieces and while the majority of the color scheme remains in an autumnal realm with mostly dark or brown shades, there are moments of bright stripes and embroidered flowers that make up for a pop of color. Despite the “grandma-chic” label, the pieces in this collection are perfectly fit for a young, trendy Fashionista on-the-go whether she is heading to class, work or out on the town.
To emulate this collection, I centered my outfit around a pair of flare denim jeans. When you think of the ’70s style, the first thing that comes to find is definitely the bell-bottom shape of pants and today retailers are embracing that trend and offering a wide range of flare pants from denim to suede and even much lighter fabrics. On top I added a babydoll textured sweater in order to replicate the mixing of textures that was shown in the alice + olivia collection. Finally, I completed the look by continuing the ’70s theme by adding a pair of oversized sunglasses that have a modern twist with the ombré frames. The gold jeweled necklace adds a small element of glam to the look, which was inspired by the more formal sequin pieces included in this collection. Lastly, a pair of suede booties finishes off the look and complements the wide leg of the jeans.
