It’s no secret that ’90s fashion is back. Well, maybe Cher’s yellow plaid blazer isn’t necessarily trending, but the return of chokers and oversized jean jackets has got us totally buggin’, and who knew the bodysuit wasn’t solely for the purpose of looking retro fab during pilates?
Although I like to believe my style is very versatile, I have always had a soft spot for the edgy characteristics made famous by the ’90s angst movement. During middle school, I wore black Vans and ripped jeans. I was the first of my friends to rock the Converse All Stars and tried to get away with wearing my beanie as long as I could before the bell rang.
Despite the fact that graphic tees and flannels are no longer a part of my everyday ensembles, I still look to incorporate subtle grunge aspects into my more “sophisticated” outfits.
As soon as the choker became a hot topic, I was able to have hundreds of options at my disposal via the enormous Forever 21 website. Not only do they have a wide variety of styles and colors, but their price point is something everyone can get on board with. As someone who prefers to utilize accessories as a way to add delicate detailing, I love the minimalistic style of a bar necklace and a scalloped lace choker. The ability of a choker to make me feel as cool and chic as Mary Kate and Ashley at the peak of their fame is what I love about the resurgence of such a classic piece.
The bodysuit resurrection has been the most satisfying trend comeback I have ever been a part of. Paired with a set of high waisted black skinnies and booties, the bodysuit helps streamline my outfit from head to toe. Taking care of tiny details such as pairing a body suit and jeans versus an untucked shirt creates a whole new vibe that allows me to not feel as if I’m in full on rocker chick mode.
Heading into Target one afternoon, I suspected not only that I would end up spending more money than I intended, but also find some items that I had not purposefully come into the store to shop for. Whilst browsing the clothing section, I stumbled upon this jean jacket, the last one left on the rack. I knew instantly that I had found what I had been unconsciously searching for: the piece capable of tying my ’90s revival look together. The light wash and small distressed touches provide just enough to keep me looking organized and clean cut.
Maybe I’ll never have to break in another pair of purple clogs, and you won’t be able to count on me wearing an argyle sweater with a blouse underneath any time soon. However, the ability for trends to pop up faintly in current fashion is something I will never say “As if!” to.
