STYLE GURU STYLE: A Modern Classic

Alexander McQueen said, “Give me time and I’ll give you a revolution.” Despite his tragically short life, McQueen gave the revolution he promised with his edgy and powerful clothing. Luckily, the innovative spirit of McQueen lives on under Sarah Burton, the creative director of the McQueen brand. In the resort 2016 collection, Burton plays homage to the past through the use of floral patterns and classic cuts, but with the daring, modern twist that is unique to the McQueen label.

Although each piece in the collection is stunning, one look in particular caught my attention. The outfit is quite simple, consisting of a black A-line skirt, white sweater and black sneakers. This may sound like a quite ordinary ensemble, but the sleekness of the lines and intricate details are effortlessly chic.

I wanted— no, I needed— this outfit. Unfortunately, I am only a college student with a budget that doesn’t afford me the luxury of buying designer clothes on a whim. Instead, I searched through my closet for pieces that would allow me to replicate the runway.

Recreating McQueen’s look was not nearly as difficult as I expected it would be. Sure, my outfit isn’t an exact copy, but that is the wonderful thing about the world of fashion— you can take any trend and make it your own. I stuck to McQueen’s color scheme, but opted for a shorter skirt and a T-shirt instead of a sweater.

What I love about this outfit is how versatile it is. You can wear it pretty much anywhere, especially with the sensible shoe choice. I may never get to walk the runway of a fashion legend, but that won’t stop me from strutting my stuff in this outfit.

Get My Look: 1. A white T-shirt or sweater. 2. A black skirt. 3. Comfortable kicks.
