I dislike fall on principle. Don’t get me wrong, the colors are beautiful and pumpkin-flavored everything is all fine and dandy, but the falling leaves and crisp air only remind me of the bittersweet close of summer and the impending winter. Generally, the season calls for boring, bulky layers in dull colors and the end of fun, bright prints. However, I found a style game changer.
Scrolling through ready-to-wear runway shows for 2015 fall fashion, this collection by alice + olivia immediately struck my fancy. One look at the glamorous ’70s feel of classic shapes mixed with jacquard patterns and oh man, I was in love. The pieces of this collection are so effortlessly and beautifully layered, keeping all of the looks more fitted and feminine while still providing warmth. Typical thick sweaters in neutral colors and equestrian style riding boots are swapped for belted trench coats and sheer tights fitted under micro-mini bottoms.
To translate this into my own look, I stuck with the simple shapes shown in the collection and sported a printed long-sleeve shift dress. The geometric floral pattern had a slight ’70s flare, with bright punches of contrasting colors against a black and white base. Keeping in line with the show, I layered sheer black tights underneath and topped off the ensemble with my favorite fringe booties. I stuck with a classic camel colored tote and mixed in pattern with one of my favorite styling tips: tying a bright floral silk scarf around the strap.
With newfound inspiration, I’m excited to break out of the sweater mold this fall.
