When it comes to showing skin in a tasteful way, I think there’s no better way to do it than by showing off your shoulders. Rebecca Minkoff did just that with her fun and flirty spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection. I loved this collection because I feel like she can relate to a younger audience of women and it shows in her design aesthetic. She demonstrated this by featuring bold patterns, bright colors and playful silhouettes. My favorite detail? The shoulder cutouts that she added in—or took out, I should say—to multiple tops and flowy dresses. As an avid fan of all things Minkoff, I started my hunt to find a version of this shoulder-less silhouette that I could actually afford.
Luckily for me, my mother came to town for ASU Family Weekend. Even luckier for me, a visiting out-of-state mom who misses you always ends up in some sort of shopping spree. We set out for a boutique that we always visit whenever she comes, but instead of sweet deals, we found a private event that led us to another boutique down the street.
I was immediately welcomed in by an army of trendy rompers and a rack full of tops begging to join my wardrobe. One of my biggest struggles with shopping is buying anything with a pattern, but my closet that’s full of solids was telling me to conquer my fear and take the pattern plunge. When it comes to buying patterned clothing, I typically opt for a dress or romper, because this way you don’t have to worry about matching it with anything. I’ll probably work my way up to tops eventually, but it’s all about baby steps, right?
